Ephesians 5:21 (ESV)

submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Talk About It

Have you ever had to let someone else go first, or decided to help when you could have done something for yourself? That’s called putting others first, and that’s what today’s verse is all about! God wants us to treat each other with love, kindness, and respect—especially in our closest relationships, like family and marriage. The Bible says that both husbands and wives should love and serve each other. God doesn’t want anyone to be the boss all the time. Instead, He wants us to look to Jesus, who came not to be served, but to serve others with love. When we put someone else’s needs before our own, we follow Jesus’ example. It can be tough to show love when we’d rather think about ourselves, but with God’s help, we can be kind, patient, and loving—even when it’s hard. No matter your age, you can show God’s love by putting others first in your family, with friends, and everywhere you go.

For Parents to Explain

Dear God, help us to be more like Jesus by loving and serving each other. Show us ways we can put others first this week. Amen.

Family Activities

Secret Servant

  1. Write each family member’s name on paper and put them in a hat.
  2. Everyone draws a name, keeping it secret!
  3. Do something kind for your person this week—like a chore, note, or act of encouragement—without telling them.
  4. At the end of the week, guess who was your "secret servant"!

Put Others First Skits

  1. Think of times when people might argue to be first, like at dinner or with toys.
  2. Pair up and act out the scene two ways: once where everyone wants to be first, and once where each person lets others go first.
  3. Talk about how it felt to put someone else ahead.
  4. End with a cheer: "Putting others first shows God's love!"

Family Prayer

Each person can pray, asking God for help to show His love to someone by putting them first.
